PMOAA proudly supports the Army ROTC program at the University of West Florida, Pensacola, FL and the Air Force ROTC Detachment 014, University Of South Alabama, Mobile, AL, located at the University Of West Florida each year by presenting MOAA leadership certificates and medals. Each University has also participated in the MOAA Gold Bar program. Since 2009, on behalf of MOAA, PMOAA has presented a total of 175 sets of Gold Bars to newly commissioned Army and Air Force Second Lieutenants.
In 2016, a decision was made by National MOAA to discontinue supporting the Gold Bar Program.
PMOAA supports twelve (12) JROTC units (USN, USA and USAF) in Pensacola and Bratt, FL, and Gulf Shores and Foley, AL. In 2016, National MOAA discontinued supporting the awards for the JROTC programs. Alternative avenues are being considered at the present time. Be it known that PMOAA feels this is an extremely important program and will make a concerted effort to provide awards to the JROTC units.
The guidelines for the ROTC/JROTC recipients are defined by MOAA as follows: must be in the next-to-last year of the ROTC or JROTC program; be in good academic standing; be of high moral character; demonstrate a high degree of loyalty to the unit, school, and country; and demonstrate exceptional potential for military leadership. Candidates are selected by the Senior Science Instructors and awards are presented at combined ceremonies for the JROTC and singular awards ceremonies for the ROTC units.
PMOAA also provides financial support to the JROTC units whenever possible. In 2009, Escambia High School was the recipient of $2000.00 to assist them in purchasing Air Rifles for drill competition. The same amount was donated to Woodham High School for a similar purchase. That school was closed and all items purchased were given to Pine Forest High School. In 2010, PMOAA donated $1660.00 to Northview High School for the purchase of unit T-shirts and shorts in school colors with NJROTC and school logos for 80 cadets. In 2011, PMOAA donated $1800.00 to Pensacola High School for new Drill and Ceremony Uniforms. In 2012, PMOAA donated $600.00 to Foley High School for new Battle Standards for the Color Guard. In 2013, PMOAA donated $1200.00 to Washington High School for Air Rifles and Air Tanks. In 2014, PMOAA donated $1200 to Tate High School for the purchase of new computers. In 2016, PMOAA presented the Gulf Breeze High School AFJROTC unit with a check for $1,000 and the Pensacola High School AFJROTC unit with a check for $600.
